Larsen Primer Grip 360 is a ready-to-use, gritty bonding primer that gives tile adhesive and self-levelling compound a mechanical key on both porous and non-porous surfaces. Use it on plaster, plasterboard, timber, concrete, epoxy DPM, flooring-grade asphalt, steel and well-bonded glazed tiles. Apply one coat by roller or brush, then tile or level once it's dry, in as little as 15–20 minutes on porous surfaces in good conditions. One 5kg tub covers approx. 25–50 m².

Key features

  • Hybrid bonding primer: advanced polymers with a special fine aggregate leave a gritty surface for a strong mechanical key
  • Porous and non-porous substrates: one universal, multi-purpose primer for absorbent and non-absorbent backgrounds
  • Ideal for tiling and levelling: use before tile adhesive or self-levelling compound
  • Rapid drying: tile over or level in as little as 15–20 minutes on porous substrates in good conditions
  • Ready to use: just stir, no water added
  • Green tint shows where it has been applied, so you don't miss areas
  • Tools clean up with warm water

Per-tub coverage is simply Larsen's per-kg figure multiplied by five.

Where to use it

  • Before tile adhesive or self-levelling compound (see our floor levelling and preparation range and our self-levelling compound guide)
  • Gypsum plaster walls, for tiles plus adhesive up to 20 kg/m². Make sure the surface is free from dust
  • Plasterboard walls, including moisture-resistant board, for tiles plus adhesive up to 32 kg/m². Boards must be securely fixed
  • Timber floors that are rigid, well supported and dry. Overboard any floor with excessive deflection, and make sure there is ventilation underneath
  • Tile backer board, dry and free of contaminants, loose dust and dirt
  • Concrete, including power-floated concrete cured for at least 28 days. Small areas can be primed directly; mechanically prepare large areas first (for example shot blasting and vacuuming)
  • Gypsum-based screeds after mechanical preparation (buffing, vacuuming), once tested dry: less than 0.5% moisture by CM or less than 75% RH. Prime particularly absorbent screeds first with one coat of Larsen Acrylic Primer diluted 1:1 with clean water
  • Epoxy damp-proof membranes that are suitably cured and free of contamination
  • Flooring-grade asphalt in good condition, cleaned with a suitable degreaser, rinsed and dried
  • Existing tiles and existing vinyl that are well bonded, clean, dry and free of sealers. Degrease in kitchens and food areas, and check the wall is strong enough to take the extra weight of new tiles
  • Steel: clean, bright metal free from oil and rust, suitably supported and fixed. A light shot-blast texture helps

How to apply

  1. Prepare the surface. It should be structurally sound and stable, suitably cured, dry, free from dust and any contamination that could affect the bond, and rigid enough for the final traffic and loading.
  2. Stir well so the aggregate is evenly distributed. Do not add water. Use straight from the tub or pour into a roller tray.
  3. Apply one even coat with a short-pile roller or brush. Don't let it pool and don't apply in thick layers. The green tint shows the areas you've covered.
  4. Let it dry thoroughly before applying tile adhesive or levelling compound: typically 15–30 minutes on absorbent surfaces, longer in cold or humid conditions and on non-porous surfaces.
  5. Keep traffic off primed areas until they are covered. Remove any splashes from adjacent surfaces with warm soapy water before they dry, and reseal the tub after use to stop it skinning.

Not suitable for painted walls that are to be tiled, or over soft bituminous materials, oils or grease. Priming will not make a poor substrate good. If in doubt, ask Larsen's technical department.

FAQs

What is Larsen Primer Grip 360 used for?

It's a ready-to-use hybrid bonding primer for tiling and flooring. It leaves a gritty surface that gives tile adhesive or self-levelling compound a mechanical key on both porous and non-porous surfaces.

Which surfaces can I use Primer Grip 360 on?

Larsen lists plaster, plasterboard, timber, concrete, epoxy DPM, flooring-grade asphalt, steel and glazed tiles. Its data sheet also covers tile backer board, gypsum-based screeds, power-floated concrete and well-bonded existing vinyl. The surface must be sound, stable, dry and clean.

How long before I can tile or level over it?

In as little as 15–20 minutes on porous surfaces in good conditions; Larsen's directions say it typically dries in 15–30 minutes on absorbent surfaces. Allow longer at low temperatures, in high humidity and on non-porous surfaces, and make sure it's thoroughly dry first.

Do I need to dilute or mix Primer Grip 360?

No. It's supplied ready to use. Stir it so the aggregate is evenly spread, but don't add water. Then use it straight from the tub or pour it into a roller tray.

How much does a 5kg tub cover?

Larsen gives 5–10 m² per kg depending on the application, so a 5kg tub covers roughly 25–50 m².

How do I apply Primer Grip 360?

Apply one coat only, with a short-pile roller or brush, to give an even coating. Don't let it pool and don't apply it in thick layers. Keep traffic off primed areas until they're covered.

Can I use it to tile over painted walls?

No. Larsen says painted walls are not suitable to receive tiling, and priming won't make a poor substrate good. It's also not suitable over soft bituminous materials, oils or grease.
