The Best Outdoor Tiles for UK Gardens & Patios

The Best Outdoor Tiles for UK Gardens & Patios

Outdoor tiling has seen a huge surge in popularity over the last few years — and it's easy to see why. A well-tiled patio or garden path transforms an outdoor space, creates a seamless indoor-outdoor flow, and adds real value to a property.

But outdoor tiling in the UK comes with its own set of challenges. Our climate is wet, cold, and unpredictable — and the wrong tile will crack, slip, or deteriorate within a couple of winters. This guide explains exactly what to look for. For background on the difference between porcelain and ceramic, and why only one of them is suitable outdoors, see our porcelain vs ceramic guide.

Why Outdoor Tiles Are Different to Indoor Tiles

Outdoor tiles are exposed to conditions that indoor tiles never face:

  • Frost and freeze-thaw cycles — water penetrates porous tiles, freezes, expands, and causes cracking or spalling
  • Rain and standing water — wet surfaces need adequate slip resistance to be safe
  • UV exposure — some tiles fade or discolour in direct sunlight over time
  • Heavy loads — patio furniture, foot traffic, and sometimes vehicles require a robust tile
  • Thermal expansion — outdoor tiles heat and cool significantly, requiring larger grout joints to accommodate movement

These requirements rule out most ceramic tiles entirely. The right choice for outdoor use in the UK is almost always outdoor-grade porcelain. Browse our full outdoor tile range to see what we stock.

The Most Important Specs to Check

Frost Resistance

Any tile intended for outdoor use in the UK must be certified as frost-resistant. Look for ISO 10545-12 frost resistance classification — this should be stated in the product specification. Frost-resistant porcelain has a water absorption rate of less than 0.5%, meaning virtually no moisture can penetrate the tile body to cause freeze-thaw damage.

Slip Resistance (R-Rating)

Slip resistance for outdoor tiles is measured on a scale from R9 to R13:

R RatingSlip ResistanceRecommended Use
R9LowIndoor use only
R10ModerateCovered outdoor areas, dry patios
R11GoodStandard outdoor use — patios, paths
R12HighWet areas, pool surrounds, ramps
R13Very HighSloped areas, commercial applications

For most UK residential patios and garden paths, R11 is the recommended minimum. If you have children, elderly family members, or a pool nearby, opt for R12.

Thickness

Outdoor porcelain tiles are typically available in two thicknesses:

  • 10–12mm — suitable for laying on a full mortar bed over a concrete sub-base
  • 20mm — specifically designed for dry-lay installation directly onto compacted gravel or sand, without adhesive. Often called "porcelain paving slabs"

For most patios, 20mm tiles on a prepared sub-base is the most popular choice. They're strong enough to bear patio furniture and foot traffic, and the dry-lay method simplifies installation.

Popular Outdoor Tile Styles

Concrete Effect (Grey)

Concrete-effect porcelain is the most popular outdoor tile style right now. Clean, contemporary, and very versatile — our grey outdoor tiles suit modern gardens, minimalist landscaping, and create a smart indoor-outdoor flow. They're also one of the most practical choices for the UK, as mid-tones show less algae and weathering than very light or very dark options.

Stone Effect (Beige & Cream)

Stone-effect porcelain replicates the look of natural stone — sandstone, limestone, travertine — without the maintenance headaches. Natural stone is porous, requires sealing, and stains easily. Our beige outdoor tiles give you a warm, natural aesthetic with none of the upkeep, and work particularly well with traditional garden styles and period properties.

Wood Effect

Wood-effect outdoor porcelain creates the warm look of hardwood decking without rot, splinters, or annual maintenance. For a coordinated look, these pair beautifully with our matching wood effect floor tiles indoors — perfect for creating a seamless indoor-outdoor flow through patio doors.

Dark Grey & Anthracite

For a bold, contemporary statement, dark grey outdoor tiles create a striking contrast against green planting and light garden furniture. They're particularly effective in modern new-build gardens and minimalist landscaping schemes.

How Big Should Outdoor Tiles Be?

Large format tiles — 600×600mm and above — look best on patios and give a premium, expansive feel. Popular outdoor sizes include 600×600mm, 600×900mm, and 600×1200mm. Fewer grout lines also mean the finished surface is easier to keep clean.

For pathways and steps, plank-style tiles (like 200×1200mm wood-effect tiles) work well and make cuts around curves and edges more manageable.

Planning Your Outdoor Tile Project

A few tips for a successful installation:

  • Allow for movement joints — outdoor tiles expand and contract with temperature. Leave a 5–8mm grout joint and use a flexible joint compound. We stock suitable outdoor adhesive and grout products for exactly this purpose.
  • Ensure adequate drainage — your sub-base should slope slightly away from the house (1–2%) to allow rainwater to run off
  • Order 10–15% extra — for cuts, breakages and future repairs
  • Check your sub-base — outdoor tiles need a solid, stable, level base. Any movement in the sub-base will eventually crack the tiles
